HALLOWEEN NIGHT, SAFFORD, ARIZONA — OCTOBER 31, 3:00 P.M.
The Arizona sun was still blazing over Safford Arizona Prison. Inside, the clocks were approaching three, and two familiar characters were preparing for the most frightening night of the year.
Halloween.
For most people, Halloween meant dressing up as something terrifying. For Reina Esperanza Chavez-Chastain and Kassandra Luzania, the fictional Halloween costume committee had apparently decided that zero imagination was necessary.
They just had to be themselves.
“Hey, girlfriend!” Kassandra announced, bursting in. “Tía! What are we doing tonight?”
Reina slowly looked up, her expression already exhausted.
“Why do you keep calling me Tía?” Reina snapped. “I'm not really your Tía, and it makes me sound fucking old.”
“Okay then, Grandma. Where are we going?”
Reina glared at her. “The bar. It's not like we have other options really."
“Perfect! What are you wearing?”
“I'm going as the Wicked Witch of Safford.”
Kassandra snorted, looking her up and down. “So you're not changing? You're a real witch every day of your life anyway.”
“Very funny, asshole,” Reina deadpanned. “And what exactly are you supposed to be?
Let me guess.”
Reina stared at the cheap red wig, the towering hooker boots, and a scrap of fabric that was apparently designed by someone who considered clothing a personal enemy.
“You're dressed as a whore,” Reina said flatly, “because you're a whore every day of your life. Did you even buy a costume, or did you just raid your regular closet?”
“Shut up, you old bat. It's called being glamorous,” Kassandra shot back, adjusting her boots.
Reina sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. Even though they were friends, keeping Luzania in check was a full-time, hazardous occupation.
By three o'clock, their transformations were complete. Reina wore a towering black witch's hat, an enormous purple-and-black dress, and green makeup—her glasses remaining firmly on her nose so she could accurately identify anyone foolish enough to make eye contact.
Before Kassandra could bolt for the door, Reina grabbed her by the arm.
“Listen to me,” Reina warned, her voice dropping into a deadly serious tone. “You need to behave tonight. No punching anyone in the face. I don't want to have to bail you out again.”
Kassandra rolled her eyes, already halfway out the door.
“I only punch people who deserve it, Tía!”
