AND NO JUSTICE FOR ALL

MICHAEL WESTEN. A movie-prop CIA badge, fake identities, burner phones, Mexico, fifteen federales—and the strangest flight home of my life.

There are stories you invent because reality is too boring. Then there are stories where reality looks at Hollywood, cracks its knuckles and says:

Hold my fucking beer. This is one of those stories.

A few years before Mexico, my former business partner Brian Cooper Dill, FBI Rat and I were producing our first movie, starring the late Michael Madsen.

Movies require an astonishing amount of fake shit. Police lights. License plates. Credentials. Badges. Props. Everything necessary to make fiction look convincing on camera.

Among that collection was a CIA badge.

But there was another reason Burn Notice appealed to us.

The world portrayed on that show—aliases, burner phones, false identities, cover stories, walking into a room as somebody completely different and convincing people you belonged there—wasn't entirely foreign to the life Brian and I had already been living.

We weren't CIA agents. But we understood playing a role.

We used fake identities. We used burner phones. We impersonated doctors. We presented ourselves as people we weren't. We opened offices. We opened bank accounts. We built identities, constructed stories and walked into situations playing whatever part we thought

we needed to play.

And Brian and I had very different jobs in that operation. Brian was the man behind the curtain. He prepared the paperwork, the identities, the documents and the cover. I was the one who walked through the door and made the story believable.

That was my talent.

I was also a polyglot. I spoke multiple languages, and that mattered. Spies live and die by their ability to move between worlds—to change the language, the tone, the posture,

the entire fucking identity depending on who is standing in front of them.

That was another part of the Michael Westen world that felt familiar to me.

I could read a room, become the person the situation required and sell the role with absolute conviction. Whatever else you want to call it, I was very fucking good at making people believe me.

Language was part of the disguise. If the person across from me spoke another language,

I could meet them there instead of forcing them into mine.

That made the performance stronger, the cover more believable, and the distance between Maxx Wolf and whatever identity I was wearing that day even harder to see.

A real intelligence operative survives on exactly that skill: if the cover isn't convincing,

the consequences can be fatal. Brian built the stage. I performed on it.

Sometimes it was business. Sometimes it was deception. Sometimes the line between the two became pretty fucking thin. So when we watched Burn Notice, the covert-identity side of it naturally appealed to us.

Michael Westen could change names, change phones, switch languages, construct a cover story and disappear into another version of himself.

We understood that language. And somewhere along the way, Michael Westen became our running joke.

The CIA badge was a movie prop, part inside joke. Michael Westen was the name.

Burner phones were already part of the scenery. It was funny. Until eventually the television show ended—and I actually became Michael fucking Westen.

I BECAME MICHAEL WESTEN

When Brian took me to Mexico under circumstances I have described elsewhere, he took my wallet and my real identification.

Then he gave me another ID.

The name printed on it:

MICHAEL WESTEN. Perfect!

Of every fake name in existence, I became Michael fucking Westen.

For months, that was the identity I used.

After enough time, it stops feeling strange.

Someone says “Michael,” you turn around.

Someone asks for identification, you hand them Michael Westen.

It becomes normal.

Eventually Brian returned my real wallet and identification.

But by then I had spent so long being Michael Westen that I kept the fake ID too.

So now I had both.

My real identification. and Michael Westen.

And somewhere among my possessions was that very convincing CIA badge.

Which, as you might imagine, was about to become one spectacular fucking problem.

THE PHONE CALL

Months later, Brian and I were no longer working together. By then, I was moving around Mexico as a wanted fugitive.

Then in late December my wife told me Brian had suddenly started calling her repeatedly, trying to locate me.

What I did not know at the time was what I would later learn about his communications with federal authorities.

Eventually I called him from a burner phone.

“What the fuck do you want?”

Brian told me he had a box containing some of my belongings. He said his wife was going to throw it away. He also said he had a couple of American phones for me.

All he needed was my address.

For a moment, I actually considered getting a PO box.

Then I thought:

What could he possibly fucking do?

That sentence aged beautifully.

I texted him the address of my condo in Monterrey.

He said he'd send everything the following morning.

The next morning, his phone was off.

That was my burn notice.

Brian had burned me—dropped dime, gave them my location, and told them exactly where to find me. And while I was heading out to get coffee, two Mexican federal officers grabbed me.

One on each side. Into the car.

“YOU HAVE THE WRONG GUY. I'M MICHAEL WESTEN.”

They looked at my identification.

Michael Westen.

I looked right back at them.

“You've got the wrong guy. I'm Michael Westen.”

There was one slight problem.

They already had my address.

So back to the condo we went.

Inside, they found my real identification. They found my computers. They found the burner phones. And then they found the CIA badge. Apparently it looked pretty fucking convincing.

One of the officers started talking excitedly in Spanish.

Essentially: “Captain—this guy works for the CIA.”

Now things were getting interesting. The room cleared fast. There had been around fifteen officers packed in there, but suddenly it was just the top brass—the captain and three senior Federales—standing around me, trying to figure out exactly who the hell they had just picked up.

One of them asked me directly:

“You work for the CIA?”

At that moment, explaining Michael Madsen, movie production, prop departments,

Burn Notice, Brian Cooper Dill FBI rat, fake identities and years of inside jokes sounded considerably more complicated than the alternative.

So I thought, Fuck it. And answered:

“Yes.” Michael Westen had entered the building.

THE WORLD'S WORST CIA OPERATION

I told them my life was in danger.

I told them they couldn't send me back to the United States.

And then, because apparently subtlety had officially left the building, I made them an offer.

I told the officers in the room:

“I'll give every one of you a year's salary in dollars if you let me go.”

Simple proposal. Everybody gets paid. I disappear. Everybody wins.

Except apparently me.

They told me they couldn't do it. One of them told me he wished he could.

They didn't make much money. But the order had come from above.

They had been told I was armed and dangerous.

They hadn't even been told what I supposedly did. Their instructions were very clear,

as they explained them to me, were basically:

Hold him.

Keep his phones and computers with him.

Put him on an airplane first thing in the morning.

Send him to Houston.

That was apparently the entire fucking intelligence briefing.

THE WORLD'S MOST POLITE CAPTURE OF A CIA AGENT

They didn't throw me into some filthy Mexican dungeon.

They put me in an office. Locked the door. Brought me a mattress.

Fed me. Treated me surprisingly well.

Considering I had just tried to buy my way out of their custody, customer service remained excellent. The next morning, around eight, they brought me clothes because I'd been detained wearing shorts.

Jeans. T-shirt. Sneakers.

They let me pick something from my own clothes and get dressed.

Then one of the senior officers arrived in a very nice pickup truck.

I sat in the back with another officers.

Another man sat up front. We started driving toward the airport.

Then the senior officer turned to me.

“You have to tell me who is trying to kill you.”

I looked at him.

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“It's classified, need to know only.”

I swear to God.

At this point even I had committed to the fucking screenplay.

He told me he couldn't help me unless I explained what was happening.

I said: “The less you know, the better.”

Somewhere, Michael Westen should have been proud.

The officer told me again that he wished he could accept my offer.

They didn't make much money. But he couldn't do it.

This was coming from his boss. Above his head.

Nothing he could do. Fair enough.

At least my attempted negotiation had received positive customer feedback.

THE PABLO ESCOBAR ESCORT

Then I saw the escort.

I counted them.

Fifteen officers.

Fifteen.

You would have thought Monterrey had finally captured Pablo Escobar.

People at the airport were staring.

Phones came out. People started filming.

Who the fuck is this guy?

Why does this guy have fifteen Federales around him?

And then it got better.

The federales started wanting pictures with me.

We'd stop.

Two officers.

Me in the middle.

Photo. Then another group. Photo. Then another officer. Then another photo.

Apparently they'd captured their American CIA operative and everybody wanted the souvenir shot. By the time we reached the airplane, this had turned into some surreal law-enforcement meet-and-greet.

Two Mexican federal officers escorted me onto the aircraft. We boarded first.

And then—more fucking pictures.

They even had the flight attendant take photographs of me sitting there with them.

There I was on an airplane with two Mexican federal officers posing beside me like they'd finally captured Carlos the Jackal.

All because years earlier Brian and I liked Burn Notice, played around with fake identities, used burner phones and bought some fucking movie props.

Somewhere in Mexico, there may still be an officer showing somebody that photograph and saying: “That's the CIA guy we caught.”

God bless him.

THE SUIT

As I remember it, someone from the American embassy showed up to make sure the transfer went smoothly.

A suit.

Of course there was a suit.

He introduced himself and said, “I’m from the American embassy. I’m here to make sure everything goes well.”

I looked at him and said, “Chief, what exactly do you think is going to go wrong? I’m not planning to hijack the fucking plane to Cuba.”

He laughed.

At that stage, the production value was becoming excellent.

We sat toward the back of the plane. The two federales stayed with me.

Michael Westen was heading home.

WELCOME HOME, MR. WOLF

We landed in Houston. The federales moved me quickly through the process.

No regular line. No waiting around.

We walked through immigration fast. Just me and the officers.

VIP treatment.

Just not the version that comes with champagne. Then I cleared the immigration area.

And there they were. About seven FBI agents and U.S. marshals, badges displayed, waiting for me in those cheap, ugly government jackets that somehow make everybody wearing one look like they've arrived to inspect a broken water heater.

One of them looked at me.

“Welcome home, Mr. Wolf.”

And just like that—Michael Westen disappeared.

The burner phones were finished. The fake ID had done its job.

The movie-prop CIA badge had somehow gone from Hollywood bullshit to international fucking incident.

And my personal episode of Burn Notice had reached its season finale.

Burn notice complete.
