AND NO JUSTICE FOR ALL

THE SHIT BUCKET AND THE PISS FUNNEL — PART II

WELCOME TO THE SHU SHU they came for Wolf around quarter to nine. Just before count.

No warning. No explanation. One minute he was in the regular SHU. The next, officers were moving him deeper into Florence. The Special Housing Unit within the Special Housing Unit.

The cell was roughly seven feet long and five feet wide. His mat took up about six feet of that length. There was nowhere meaningful to walk. Nowhere to turn prison into anything resembling life. Then came the inventory. Bars. Mat. Shit bucket. Piss funnel. That was the fucking bathroom.

There was no toilet. No running water. No shower. He ate in the same box where he relieved himself. Then he wiped himself. Then he ate again. And again. And again. There was no sink where he could simply wash his hands and pretend civilization had followed him inside.

And the ultimate cruelty: a mandated ration of only two small Styrofoam cups of water per day—a starvation-level drip meant to keep a man barely hydrated enough to suffer for thirteen agonizing days.

He brushed his teeth with a dry, abrasive brush, his gums aching, relying entirely on the meager two small Styrofoam cups of water allowed each day to rinse away the metallic taste of his own despair. That was his entire fluid intake for twenty-four hours. Thirteen days of perpetual, agonizing thirst, where every swallow was a luxury and dehydration was weaponized to break his will.

The fluorescent lights stayed on. The ventilation system blew arctic cold air through the cell. Wolf remembers lying on the slab while freezing air moved around him and bright light hammered his eyes through the night. "You slept beneath fluorescent lights blasting into your face," Wolf recalls, "like some dystopian game show where the prize was nerve damage."

The government could call the room whatever bureaucratic name it wanted. Special housing. Observation. Isolation. Security. Procedure.

No natural rhythm. No real darkness. No privacy, dignity. Just light, concrete, cold, and time.

“Welcome to the Twilight Zone,”

SOLITARY CONFINEMENT IS TORTURE:

HOW THEY BROKE DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL LAWS

When the government locks a human being in a seven-by-five-foot concrete box for 13 days with a shit bucket, a piss funnel, 24-hour blinding light, and arctic cold, they are not enforcing administrative security. They are breaking domestic and international law.

As legal consensus confirms: solitary confinement is torture. Whenever you keep somebody in solitary confinement, what you are doing is keeping them there to break their spirit, to break their soul, and to break the psychology of the mind.

It is an egregious misuse of the judicial system.

Under international law—including the Nelson Mandela Rules and the Geneva Conventions—prolonged solitary confinement is universally condemned. So horrific and damaging is this practice that 16 different U.S. states—including Colorado, the very state where Florence is located—have enacted strict laws and policies to heavily regulate, limit, or outright ban prolonged solitary confinement to protect human dignity.

Furthermore, under United States constitutional law, the protections are absolute. Un-convicted or pre-trial citizens are protected by the Fifth Amendment, which dictates that no innocent person can be punished while being held for any proceeding.

Even for convicted prisoners, the Eighth Amendment guards against cruel and unusual punishment, establishing that prison conditions cannot deprive a human being of the minimal civilized measure of life's necessities.

As the Supreme Court made clear in Taylor v. Riojas, extreme conditions involving human waste, filth, and frigid cells are unconstitutional, and officers cannot escape liability simply because the torture lasted days instead of months.

Yet, Florence subjected Maxx Wolf to precisely this type of captivity. They violated their own Bureau of Prisons regulations (28 C.F.R. § 541.31), which mandate “healthy and humane treatment” and expressly guarantee an inmate access to a wash basin and a toilet—not a shit bucket and a piss funnel.

They also violated 28 C.F.R. § 541.25, which requires a formal administrative detention order explaining the reason for placement within 24 hours.

THE PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE AND THE WITNESSES

Wolf says the physical conditions were only half the game. The other half was psychological.

Guards sometimes brought meals late or skipped them all together. They banged on the door or food slot at unpredictable hours. They shined lights inside, stopped outside his cell, whispered, laughed, opened the slot, stared in, and slammed it shut. Again. And again. A sick little metronome counting down the hours.

The objective, as Wolf saw it, was obvious: get inside his head. Make him anxious. Make him angry. Make him react. Give the paperwork something to feed on.

But Wolf did something else.

He studied them.

Boots. Keys. Voices. Timing. Patterns. Which guard was bored. Which one was stupid. Which one enjoyed the power. Which one seemed nervous. Which ones already knew about his website.

They wanted him panicked. He became observant.

They wanted him broken. He became sharper.

Isolation didn’t empty his mind. It gave his mind nowhere else to go.

The one thing prison officials couldn’t lock inside the SHU SHU was what he carried in his head. They could threaten his future inside the institution. They could try to convince him that the concrete around him was permanent. But they couldn’t control what he remembered, what he noticed, or what he intended to say when he got out.

Some days, he felt the walls pushing inward.

Some nights, he couldn’t sleep.

Other times, his body simply shut down from exhaustion.

But Wolf did something else. He studied them.” It gives the whole section a colder turn.

And when his own thoughts started turning against him, Wolf kept repeating one thing: This too shall pass. Not as religion. Not as inspiration-poster bullshit. As tactics. Time was still moving. Even here.

Even in the SHU SHU.

That became the battle. Not defeating the prison. Not pretending the conditions didn't hurt. Simply lasting longer than the punishment. Eventually, the door opened.

This time it wasn't simply the usual correctional officers. A lieutenant gave him the line that stayed with him: “Look, Wolf. This wasn't our idea. This came from the top.”

Wolf says nobody needed to explain what “the top” meant to him. He knew Warden Christian Lepe had authorized the treatment because of Wolf's writing and his refusal to stop publishing criticism of Florence staff.

Under federal regulation 28 C.F.R. § 541.25, a prisoner placed in administrative detention ordinarily must receive an administrative detention order within 24 hours explaining the reason for the placement.

So the question is simple: What was the documented reason for putting Maxx Wolf in the SHU SHU—and where is the paperwork? When asked, they said it was because of an “ongoing investigation.” That was the excuse. A bullshit excuse, sure—but at least an excuse they could put on paper. What they could not say was that Maxx Wolf was being punished for exercising his First Amendment rights.

THE GOVERNMENT CAN DENY IT, BUT THE WITNESSES, AFFIDAVITS PROVE IT

The government and prison officials can try to deny every single detail of this. They can claim the SHU SHU was standard procedure, or pretend the conditions never happened. They can lie all they want, but Maxx Wolf holds the proof.

Maxx Wolf has his cellmates—men who lived in the tier alongside him, who watched him get hauled away into the dark box, who witnessed his physical state when he was dragged back out 13 days later, and who have signed legal affidavits proving the exact dates he left, the exact dates he returned, and the brutal conditions he survived.

The logs can be hidden, the paperwork can be missing, but human witnesses and sworn affidavits do not disappear.

Eventually, they sent him back to the regular SHU. Think about that sentence. After a shit bucket and piss funnel, freezing air, fluorescent lights, no running water, psychological games, isolation, and concrete walls— the regular SHU felt like an upgrade.

That was Florence's version of progress. Not freedom. Not an apology. Not accountability.

Just a larger fucking cage.

But Wolf came out carrying something the prison couldn't confiscate. The record. Every door. Every insult. Every cold night. Every bang on the steel. Every meal. Every skipped meal. Every shit in that bucket. Every piss through that funnel. And the sworn affidavits of the men who watched it happen.

They thought isolation would kill the story. Instead, they wrote the next chapter for him. They tried to silence the Wolf. They failed. And once Wolf got his keyboard back, the shit bucket and the piss funnel weren't hidden inside Florence anymore. Neither were the names.

IF THIS WAS “HEALTHY AND HUMANE TREATMENT,” SHOW THE RECORD.

Show the authorization. Show the reason. Show the reviews. Show the sanitation records. Show the exercise records. Show why a federal prisoner needed a shit bucket and a piss funnel instead of the toilet and wash basin described in the government's own regulations, and why they violated international laws against torture. Because concrete can hide a man. It cannot rewrite the rulebook.

And Maxx Wolf is still saying what he wants.

There is not a fucking thing anyone can do about lawful publication, public record, satire, commentary, and the First Amendment with teeth.

Get used to it.

Maxx Wolf has one job now.

Every day.
