BRIAN COOPER DILL: CARTE BLANCHE, NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT

THE GOLD CARD

Special Agent Joel Seaton leaned back in his leather chair and looked across the desk at Brian Cooper Dill, enjoying the crisp, cool sixty-five degrees of the Los Angeles federal building while Maxx Wolf was chained to a bolt in the back of a federal transport van winding its way toward San Francisco.

The tension that had filled the room during the December debriefings was entirely gone. The play was over. The trap had sprung.

"You did a fantastic job, Brian," Seaton said, his voice carrying the calm satisfaction of a bureaucrat who had just cleared his desk of a heavy file. "You put that son of a bitch Maxx Wolf right where he belongs. Your country thanks you for it. Go be with your family. Enjoy them."

Seaton reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a gleaming, laminated piece of plastic, and slid it across the polished mahogany desk. It caught the fluorescent light, glittering like an elite casino rewards token.

"We are here to present you with the gold card," Seaton chuckled, a sharp, knowing glint in his eye. "The FBI card. The For Rats Only card. Never leave home without it."

Brian picked up the card. A slow, greasy smile spread across his face.

"This is the ultimate reset button," Seaton continued, leaning forward, his tone dropping into a matter-of-fact register. "Everything you have done in the past? Erased. The gray BMW, the border games, the missing gold—consider it ancient history.

The machine got the meat it wanted, so your ledger is completely clean. Just do me a favor: don't go out and commit any new crimes tomorrow."

Brian shifted in his chair, clearing his throat with a sudden, nervous hitch. He tapped the edge of the gold card against his thumb.

"Well, you know, Agent Seaton," Brian muttered, dropping his eyes to look like the humble, helpful driver he always pretended to be, "there is that one thing. The PPP loan. You know, from the pandemic."

Seaton didn't even blink. He just stared, waiting.

"But look," Brian added quickly, waving his hands to minimize the damage, "it was totally under my brother's name. He just gave me a couple hundred thousand dollars out of it. So really, technically, I didn't even do anything wrong.

I just want to stay with my family. I want to be good from here on out. I'm a family man."

Seaton let out a short, dry laugh, waving off the millions of dollars in stolen taxpayer funds like someone brushing a speck of lint off his lapel.

"Under your brother's name?" Seaton said, standing up to signal the meeting was over. "Then it sounds like a paperwork issue for someone else to worry about. Like I said, Brian, the card covers the past. Enjoy the fresh air, enjoy the movies, and make sure you keep your head down."

And just like that, the deal was sealed.

One man got the cage, bound for a cold cell in California. The other got the connections, walking out into the bright California sun with two million dollars in government gravy, a production credit pipeline opening up with Disney, and absolute, unconditional carte blanche.

Only in fucking America.
